# Connect

Connect Claude Code, claude.ai, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, or VS Code to the Graphon MCP server with OAuth or an API key.

## Server URL

https://api.beta.graphon.ai/mcp (HTTP transport)

## Sign in

- OAuth (the default): add the URL with no credentials. The client finds the
  Graphon sign-in from the server's 401 challenge. On the Graphon consent page,
  the user picks the role that the app gets: Admin, Editor, or Viewer, from
  their highest workspace role down. The app never gets more than the
  user's role in a workspace. To disconnect an app, open Settings → Security →
  Connected apps in the Graphon app.
- API key: send `Authorization: Bearer $GRAPHON_API_KEY`. The connection gets the key's role.
- Roles: Viewer reads. Editor also writes buckets and objects. Admin also
  manages members, invitations, and workspace API keys, and can delete or
  restore the workspace.

The server lists only the tools that the role of the connection covers. See
[Tools](/mcp/tools.md) for every tool and the role that it needs.

## Set up a client

### Claude Code

With OAuth:

1. Add the server.

   ```bash
   claude mcp add --transport http graphon https://api.beta.graphon.ai/mcp
   ```

2. In Claude Code, run `/mcp`, select `graphon`, and sign in. Approve the connection on the Graphon consent page.

With an API key:

1. Add the server with an `Authorization` header. The shell reads the key from `GRAPHON_API_KEY`.

   ```bash
   claude mcp add --transport http graphon https://api.beta.graphon.ai/mcp \
     --header "Authorization: Bearer $GRAPHON_API_KEY"
   ```

### claude.ai

With OAuth:

1. Open Customize → Connectors. Click Add, then Add custom connector.
2. Enter `Graphon` as the name and the server URL. Keep the default Authentication settings and click Add.

   ```text
   https://api.beta.graphon.ai/mcp
   ```

3. Sign in when claude.ai asks. Approve the connection on the Graphon consent page.

With an API key:

1. When you add the connector, choose No sign in under Authentication. Under Request headers, add the header `Authorization` with the value `Bearer gak_...`, your API key.

On a Team or Enterprise plan, an owner adds the connector in Organization settings → Connectors. Each member then clicks Connect.

### ChatGPT

With OAuth:

1. In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings → Security and login and turn on Developer mode.
2. Open Plugins, select the plus button, and choose Create MCP App. Enter `Graphon` as the name. Under Connection, choose Server URL and paste the server URL. Choose OAuth for authentication, then create the app.

   ```text
   https://api.beta.graphon.ai/mcp
   ```

3. Approve the connection on the Graphon consent page.

Developer mode is available on the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans.

### Codex

With OAuth:

1. Add the server.

   ```bash
   codex mcp add graphon --url https://api.beta.graphon.ai/mcp
   ```

2. Sign in. Codex opens your browser. Approve the connection on the Graphon consent page.

   ```bash
   codex mcp login graphon
   ```

With an API key:

1. Add the server to `~/.codex/config.toml`. Codex sends the key in `GRAPHON_API_KEY` as a bearer token.

   ```toml
   [mcp_servers.graphon]
   url = "https://api.beta.graphon.ai/mcp"
   bearer_token_env_var = "GRAPHON_API_KEY"
   ```

### Cursor

With OAuth:

1. Add the server to `~/.cursor/mcp.json`, or to `.cursor/mcp.json` in a project.

   ```json
   {
     "mcpServers": {
       "graphon": {
         "url": "https://api.beta.graphon.ai/mcp"
       }
     }
   }
   ```

2. Open Cursor Settings → Tools & MCP and sign in to `graphon`. Approve the connection on the Graphon consent page.

With an API key:

1. Add an `Authorization` header. Cursor reads the key from `GRAPHON_API_KEY`.

   ```json
   {
     "mcpServers": {
       "graphon": {
         "url": "https://api.beta.graphon.ai/mcp",
         "headers": {
           "Authorization": "Bearer ${env:GRAPHON_API_KEY}"
         }
       }
     }
   }
   ```

### VS Code

With OAuth:

1. Add the server to `.vscode/mcp.json` in your workspace.

   ```json
   {
     "servers": {
       "graphon": {
         "type": "http",
         "url": "https://api.beta.graphon.ai/mcp"
       }
     }
   }
   ```

2. Start the server. VS Code opens your browser to sign in. Approve the connection on the Graphon consent page.

With an API key:

1. Add an `Authorization` header. VS Code asks for the key when the server starts.

   ```json
   {
     "inputs": [
       {
         "type": "promptString",
         "id": "graphon-api-key",
         "description": "Graphon API key",
         "password": true
       }
     ],
     "servers": {
       "graphon": {
         "type": "http",
         "url": "https://api.beta.graphon.ai/mcp",
         "headers": {
           "Authorization": "Bearer ${input:graphon-api-key}"
         }
       }
     }
   }
   ```

## Files

To store content that you wrote, call write_object. To upload a file from disk, call create_object_upload_url and run the returned curl command. For many files, or files over 200 MiB, use `graphon objects put`.
